SUMMARY:Aspiring Commons – (Re)discoveries and Learning Opportunities from the Global South
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a thought-provoking symposium\, titled Aspiring Commons – (Re)discoveries and Learning Opportunities from the Global South. During this afternoon\, we aim to explore how practices from the Global South can inspire and inform collective action initiatives in Europe. The keynote will be given by Ruth Meinzen-Dick\, Senior Research Fellow at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). The symposium will also include presentations and a panel discussion on how transdisciplinary approaches\, reciprocity between academics and practitioners\, and innovative frameworks can address wicked problems and support sustainable resource management.  \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\nThis event will take place at Campus Woudestein\, Erasmus University Rotterdam. If you would like to attend\, sign up through the form. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the keynote speaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRuth Meinzen-Dick is a Senior Research Fellow at IFPRI\, where she leads groundbreaking research on natural resource governance\, agricultural development\, and gender. She has extensive transdisciplinary research experience in using qualitative and quantitative research methods. Her work focuses on two broad (and sometimes interrelated) areas: how institutions affect how people manage natural resources\, and the role of gender in development processes. This has led her to study land and water policy\, property rights\, collective action and other governance arrangements\, games for experiential learning\, and the impact of development interventions\, drawing on fieldwork in India\, Nepal\, Sri Lanka\, Bangladesh\, Tanzania\, Ghana\, Kenya\, Uganda\, and Zimbabwe.  \n\n\n\nRuth is a co-creator of the Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI) and recipient of the Elinor Ostrom Collective Governance of the Commons 2019 Senior Scholar Award. She holds a PhD in development sociology from Cornell University.  \n\n\n\nPresentations\n\n\n\n\nRosalba Icaza Garza\, Associate Professor Global Politics\, Feminisms and Decoloniality at the International Institute of Social Studies\, Erasmus University Rotterdam. With her presentation she will dive into the question: Can we respond to the possibility of an ethical life that is not structurally implicated with the suffering and the consumption of the life of earth and others? \n\n\n\nJulie-Marthe Lehmann\, researcher and founder of Spaarkracht. She became intrigued by the concept of savings groups in the Global South and conducted action-oriented research on their potential effects in the Netherlands\, culminating in her dissertation “Balancing the social and financial side of the coin.“\n\n\n\nFabio de Castro\, senior lecturer at CEDLA\, the Faculty of Humanities\, University of Amsterdam. He is coordinator of the Master Programme in Latin American Studies and chair of the Netherlands Association for Latin American and Caribbean Studies. He will will discuss how innovative practices\, social interactions\, and institutions emerging within various forest-based economies in Brazil can serve as a source of inspiration for other regions in fostering more inclusive and sustainable value chains.\n\n\n\n\nOn the panel\n\n\n\n\nRuth Meinzen-Dick.\n\n\n\nCee Marlin\, practitioner with more than 20 years of experience in sustainability and environmentally friendly projects and agriculture in the Global South\, with special focus on the Caribbean.\n\n\n\nDiana Suhardiman\, professor of Natural Resource Governance\, Climate and Equity at Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology\, Leiden University.\n\n\n\nTaslim Alade\, senior lecturer at the Business-Society Management Department\, Rotterdam School of Management (RSM)\, focusing on impact-driven education and research in a complex and interconnected world. \n\n\n\nModeration: Lukas Held\, CollectieveKracht project coordinator.\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nErasmus University Rotterdam (map)\, Sanders Building\, room 0-01.

SUMMARY:International Symposium on Cooperatives and International Law

SUMMARY:LECTURE BY TINE DE MOOR ON THE SPREAD OF COLLECTIVE INSTITUTIONS IN EUROPE
DESCRIPTION:As part of the MOTI seminar series at Grenoble École de Management\, professor Tine De Moor will give a lecture on the historical development and geographical spread of institutions for collective action in Europe\, focusing on the example of guilds. \n\n\n\nTine DE MOOR will present: “Contagious Institutions? A longitudinal study of institutional spillover of European guilds”. \n\n\n\nFrom the 12th to the 19th century\, guilds became a dominant organizational form across Europe. While their emergence is often linked to urbanization and economic growth\, this lecture explores how spatial and temporal dynamics also shaped their diffusion. Using a large-scale longitudinal dataset and statistical modelling\, the study shows how institutional models like guilds spread between regions over time — offering insights into the mechanisms of institutional spillover and adaptation. \n\n\n\nLocation: Room F601\, Grenoble École de Management \n\n\n\nJoin online: https://grenoble-em.zoom.us/my/semardf601

SUMMARY:Research Day of IOS Platform 'Bottom-up Initiatives for Societal Change'
DESCRIPTION:This research day facilitates the interdisciplinary sharing of expertise and helps to create (new) networks and collaborations. Researchers affiliated with the IOS platform will present their work and professor Tine De Moor (Rotterdam School of Management\, Erasmus University) will give a keynote lecture on the maturation of citizen collectives in the Netherlands. She will explore how these initiatives have grown into a diverse and influential movement shaping energy\, housing\, care and food systems through democratic governance\, local stewardship and long‑term community orientation. Their evolution shows that such collectives are not a temporary trend\, but a vital complementary governance form whose impact on just and sustainable transitions is increasingly visible across Dutch society. \n\n\n\n\nRegister here\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nLocation: Minnaert Building\, Leuvenlaan 4\, room 2.02 \n\n\n\nEntrance if free of charge\, prior registration however is requested because limited seating

SUMMARY:VLG Symposium - Commons in agriculture and forestry
DESCRIPTION:This symposium explores the history\, function\, and legacy of commons\, especially in the Dutch context. It examines how commons operated historically\, their institutional mechanisms\, and their relevance today. \n\n\n\nProfessor Tine De Moor’s will give a lecture\, focusing on the renewed interest in commons as alternatives to state and market governance. She critically assesses how historical knowledge about commons is often used uncritically or inconsistently in modern discourse. Her talk asks: What can we truly learn from historical commons? Which mechanisms ensured their sustainability? And how do they compare to other forms of collective organization in the past? \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\nThis event will be in Dutch. SUMMARY:CollectieveKracht - Citizen collectives and the market: between clashing logics and innovative collaboration
DESCRIPTION:Over the past years\, citizen collectives have grown into visible players in sectors such as energy\, healthcare\, housing\, and food. What does their rise mean for how we organize our economy? The next CollectieveKracht event (in Dutch) will dive into this question with a keynote from Professor Irene van Staveren (ISS\, Erasmus University) and five parallel interactive sessions. \n\n\n\n\nGet a ticket\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThis event will take place at the Lindenberg Cultuurhuis in Nijmegen. This event is made possible by the municipality of Nijmegen. \n\n\n\nDescriptionCitizen collectives seem to follow a different institutional logic than the market\, but their actual relationship with the market is not always so clear. They redistribute economic power\, potentially reduce dependence on major market players\, and can even discipline markets through price pressure or new norms. At the same time\, their increasing numbers raise important tensions. Does competition arise between collective and commercial providers—and is that desirable? What happens when collectives professionalize? What happens when they make a profit? Can they use market mechanisms without losing their own values\, or does mission drift threaten once financial sustainability becomes more important? \n\n\n\nThis event brings together scientists\, policymakers\, practical experts\, and representatives of citizen collectives to explore these questions in depth. For everyone who wants to understand how the economy and society are reinventing themselves from the ground up.

SUMMARY:Symposium - Community contributions to societal challenges: Why they matter and how they work
DESCRIPTION:Community participation is vital for well-functioning societies. Both in academic circles and in societal institutions\, there is lively debate and experimentation with various forms of community participation. These can range from community initiatives to citizen councils and other cooperative arrangements where people get together. Community engagement is crucial for creating support for societal transitions and for building trust between citizens and institutions. Importantly\, it gives people the opportunity to take part in dialogue with politicians and policymakers and get involved in creating solutions for wicked problems. However\, there is still much uncertainty about how communities become empowered to contribute in a way that allows for genuine involvement. In this symposium\, we will explore emerging ways for community voices to be heard. We will examine how communities can foster a lively democracy and build societies where everyone can flourish\, while also investigating how (local) governments can effectively enable and engage their citizens. What are the most promising models for collective action? And do these citizen initiatives even need government support to succeed? \n\n\n\nAs part of the program\, Professor Tine De Moor (Rotterdam School of Management\, Erasmus University) will give a presentation. \n\n\n\nOrganizers: Denise de Ridder\, Marleen Gillebaart\, Lars Tummers & John de Wit on behalf of the Behavior & Institutions platform at Utrecht University \n\n\n\nPreliminary program \n\n\n\n\nMorning: Presentations followed by a panel discussion\n\n\n\nAfternoon: Demonstrations of strategies enabling citizens to contribute as a community\n\n\n\n\nLocation: Johanna Hudig Building\, Achter Sint Pieter 200 (Utrecht City Center)
