SUMMARY:Meetup about Tegenlicht episode: 'Naomi Klein and the Pull to the Right'
DESCRIPTION:After the results of the European elections of June 6\, we will meetup in the Rotterdam Library for inspiration for the political future. The episode of VPRO Tegenlicht about the book ‘Doppelganger’ by Naomi Klein is the central point of discussion during this event. According to author Klein\, we must look for the answer in movements that take collective action. \n\n\n\nTine De Moor\, professor at Erasmus University Rotterdam\, and Florian Cramer\, teacher at the Willem de Kooning Academy\, will speak during this meetup. They will discuss with the audience what we can do in Rotterdam to strengthen the collective from the bottom up. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis meetup will be in Dutch. There will be a screening of the episode from 18:00-19:00. The programme will start at 19:00. Find more information on this event here.

SUMMARY:Charging the Commons Workshop: Relational interface for more-than-human commons
DESCRIPTION:Nieuwe Instituut Zoöp\, together with the research and design initiatives Charging the Commons and Dark Matter Lab\, is organising a workshop to explore how design can contribute to the technological and organisational conditions of a more-than-human consciousness. What kind of ‘relational interfaces’ can help us to imagine relationships with each other\, different life forms and the planet that are based on stewardship and the common good\, rather than domination and ownership? \n\n\n\n\nMartijn de Waal (head of the Civic Interaction Design) research group at the AUAS) explains relational technology and relational interfaces on behalf of Charging the Commons.\n\n\n\nDesigner-researcher Yin Aiwen introduces the relational board game Liquid Dependencies.\n\n\n\nFang-Jui Chang and Calvin Po present some examples of relational interfaces that Dark Matter Labs is using to promote an alternative civic economy.

SUMMARY:PhD defence - Gigs of their Own: Can platform cooperatives become resilient?
DESCRIPTION:You are warmly invited to the PhD defence of Damion Bunders on 15 March 2024 at 10:30 in the Senaatszaal of Erasmus University Rotterdam. The dissertation is about platform cooperatives as an alternative form of organisation where gig workers own and manage a digital platform collectively. It includes an analysis of the challenges these cooperatives face to better understand the conditions under which they could become resilient organisations. \n\n\n\nPlease fill in the following form if you are attending the PhD defence (and reception afterwards at 12.00). \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\nYou can also join the live stream. \n\n\n\nBrief summary of the doctoral thesisThe gig economy\, where mostly self-employed workers perform short-term service jobs intermediated by digital platforms\, is often portrayed as offering a glimpse at the future of work. Platform cooperatives that are owned and controlled by gig workers themselves have emerged as an alternative form of organisation to the currently dominant investor-owned platforms. The appeal of platform cooperatives as an alternative is to provide more secure working conditions and democratic control over the platform. In his PhD project\, Damion Bunders investigates the challenges that gig workers face when organising themselves in a cooperative enterprise. In particular\, he provides insight into the initial feasibility and more long-term challenges of platform cooperatives as one institutional approach to organise work differently in the gig economy by analysing the conditions under which cooperatives of gig workers can become resilient. The project addresses questions on enterprise formation\, member commitment\, democratic governance\, and coordination of collective resources. Damion takes a multi-disciplinary and multi-method approach\, combining theory from sociology and institutional economics with interview\, survey\, and text analysis research. Just as economists have long wondered why firms are usually controlled by capital suppliers instead of by labour suppliers\, this dissertation addresses the puzzle of why platforms are not more commonly owned and governed by workers. \n\n\n\nAddressSenaatszaal\, Erasmus BuildingBurg. SUMMARY:Workshop: Public Goods in History
DESCRIPTION:The Oxford Centre for Economic and Social History organizes the workshop ‘Non-rivalrous\, non-excludable: an interdisciplinary workshop on the evolution of public goods in history’. It explores the evolution of public goods and how their provision is shaped by institutions and norms over time.  \n\n\n\nEconomists have defined public goods as resources whose consumption by one individual does not diminish their availability to others\, while also being accessible to all\, regardless of their contribution to provision. However\, the traditional lens often falls short in explaining how societies cooperate to provide public goods\, a topic of increasing relevance in the face of contemporary challenges in public health and environmental sustainability. These issues highlight the urgency of understanding the provision of non-market public goods. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: Avner Offer\, Tine De Moor\, Sheila Pugh\, David Gawkrdoger\, Cesare Vagge\, Joost Haddinga\, Louis Henderson\, and Victoria Gierok. \n\n\n\nDetails: This event is on February 9th\, 2024 from 9am-5pm (GMT). It takes place in the Memorial Room of Jesus College Oxford.

SUMMARY:Charging the Commons #1 - (Be)Commoning
DESCRIPTION:This is the first episode of the series Charging the Commons and it will center around the process of becoming a commons. What does establishing such a community entail? What steps does a group of people need to go through in order to become a commons? This early setup stage can profoundly shape the development process of such communities\, for instance: its (economic) viability\, the management of the shared resources\, everyday practices\, members’ relationship with each other or the community affiliation with the broader environment. Exploring the process of becoming a commons (becommoning) can reveal useful insights around challenges and external factors. \n\n\n\nLukas Held from CollectieveKracht participates in this conversation with Zsuzsanna Tomor (researcher at AUAS)\, Darinka Czischke (professor at TU Delft) and Joachim Meerkerk (PhD at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences).

SUMMARY:Open seminar: Dr Anastasia Sergeeva
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Anastasia Sergeeva (RSM) will present her paper “Values-based Trust as a Shift Parameter for Collective Organizing: The Case of Magnum Photos“. \n\n\n\nThe paper discusses how economic agents can address the concern of opportunism when organizing collectively. The study examines Magnum Photos\, a cooperative of freelance photographers\, and identifies two mechanisms by which shared values engender non-calculative trust\, making collective organizing economically viable. The shared values attenuate hazards of opportunism\, promote risk-bearing and innovation when property rights are assigned appropriately\, and the size of the collective remains relatively small. The study concludes that Magnum Photos is a form of collective entrepreneurship adopted by risk-bearing agents bound by shared values\, and provides unique insights into how economic agents can organize around shared values to mitigate opportunism and innovate in industries with measurement problems. \n\n\n\nPlease send an email to collective-action@rsm.nl if you would like to attend this seminar.

SUMMARY:Webinar Herenboeren: Participation of Members
DESCRIPTION:On 15 March\, Herenboeren’s Winter Webinar will take place with the theme ‘Participation of Members’. A key pillar of the Herenboerderij is social connectedness. The local community makes these cooperatives possible and is the buyer of the products. But how do we ensure sustainable connection and participation of cooperative members on the Herenboerderij? This question is the focus of the webinar. Two interesting speakers will give their insights during the webinar. Christiaan Bikker\, project officer at the HAS\, will share his findings on sustainable participation of cooperative members. And Professor Tine De Moor\, initiator of CollectieveKracht\, will talk about the resilience and development of citizen collectives. \n\n\n\nThe webinar is in Dutch and free and will take place from 20:00 to 21:30. Registration is mandatory and can be done via the registration form. More information can be found here.
