10EMESConf – Presentation on LLMs as a way to study commons

During the 10th EMES International Research Conference on Social Enterprise, Marianne Groep-Foncke gave a presentation, titled: ‘Studying commons with low-treshold LLMs: an exploration’ (Marianne Groep-Foncke and Tine De Moor, Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University).

Automating certain aspects of data collection and processing in the Social Sciences and Humanities can help researchers bypass some of the more time-consuming tasks, allowing them to focus more on analysis and to work with larger datasets. In her presentation, Marianne presented a case study from the former Common Rules project, conducted by the research group Social Enterprises & Institutions for Collective Action (SEICA). She explored whether open-source, low-threshold (s)LLMs can already handle specific tasks such as qualitative data coding, and examined the limitations and challenges that current and future researchers in the Social Sciences and Humanities must consider when integrating such AI-driven tools into their work. The presentation was part of the session Knowledge Commons and Digital Methods on Thursday 6 November. During the EMES conference week, several team members of the SEICA research group will present their work. View the full program.
