Eveline Castelijns

Eveline Castelijns, part-time PhD student

Biography

After completing her Master’s degree in Health Sciences at the University of Maastricht in 2004, Eveline started her professional career at the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sports, with an emphasis on quality and innovation in healthcare. In 2009 she joined the healthcare team at Berenschot, a renowned Dutch research and consultancy firm. As a senior managing consultant she nowadays focusses on research and boardroom consulting in the long term care, with a special focus on strategy development and implementation and organizational change in elderly care.

The insights gained over 15 years while working closely with key players in long term care is that care must be sustainable in terms of financial means, personnel and public support in order to guarantee quality and accessibility. However, these three dimensions of sustainability are under increasing pressure due to a number of developments. To mitigate the healthcare gap, transformative change that fundamentally shifts current behavioral, economic, social, cultural, institutional, and technological trajectories is necessary. So far many governmental and healthcare institutions are struggling to bring about the needed transformative change. At the same time, there are an increasing number of examples of citizen collectives and institutions for collective action (ICA’s) spread throughout the Netherlands focusing on healthcare services. However, no extensive research has been done to this day. And so Eveline has converted her curiosity by means of a part-time PhD to explore the potential of these ICA’s to guide or accelerate transformative change in the Dutch healthcare ecosystem.
