After L-IG has reconstructed candidate genealogies with explicit confidence, agent-based modelling (ABM) tests whether transmission, imitation, independent adaptation, recombination and experimentation can generate the reconstructed patterns (Ale Ebrahim Dehkordi et al., 2021). This element of CoCon builds on the Modelling Institutional Dynamics in Historical Commons (MIDI) project, which adopted an interdisciplinary approach to generate empirically grounded and systematic insights into the mechanisms driving institutional change. Building on a dataset of European commons-management institutions developed by the Research Team Institutions for Collective Action as part of the Common Rules project, MIDI aimed to advance understanding of these dynamics. The project leveraged interdisciplinary expertise to recode the dataset using a systematic institutional analysis framework, unlocking its full potential through data mining and evolutionary analysis techniques. The resulting insights were integrated into an agent-based model designed to capture the core dynamics of institutional change.
